Gross pay and net pay
Gross pay is what you earn before deductions. Net pay is what lands in your bank account. People also call it take-home pay.
On £45,000 gross, income tax takes £6,486 and National Insurance takes £2,594 a year, which leaves £35,920 net.
What comes off your gross pay
Income tax is worked out on pay above your Personal Allowance. National Insurance is 8% on pay between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that.
Student loan repayments and workplace pension contributions come off too, if you have them. Use the options in the calculator to add them.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between net pay and take-home pay?
Nothing for most people. Both mean the money you receive after tax, National Insurance and other deductions.
Why is my payslip different from the calculator?
Benefits in kind, other income, an emergency tax code or a different pension set-up can all change your payslip. The calculator assumes a standard employee.
Can I work backwards from net pay to gross?
Try a few salaries until the take-home figure matches your payslip. The salary pages list the result for every £1,000 step.
