A £2,000 rise, worked through
Moving from £35,000 to £37,000 adds £120 a month to your take-home pay. It does not add £167 because tax and National Insurance take a share of the extra.
Most people between £12,570 and £50,270 keep 72p of each extra pound: 20p tax and 8p National Insurance come off. With a student loan you keep 63p.
Why some rises are worth less
Between £100,000 and £125,140 each extra £1 also removes 50p of your Personal Allowance, which makes the effective income tax rate there 60%, plus 2% National Insurance.

Questions people ask
How much of a pay rise do I keep?
In the basic rate band you keep about 72p of each extra pound. In the higher rate band you keep about 58p, because 40% tax and 2% National Insurance apply.
Will a rise push me into a higher tax band?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the higher rate starts at £50,270. Only the part of your pay above that is taxed at 40%, not the whole salary.
Does a rise change my student loan repayment?
Yes, if you are above the threshold. You repay 9% of each extra pound above it.
