What this salary calculator shows
Your salary is the pay you agree before anything comes off. This page takes that number and works out income tax, employee National Insurance and any student loan repayment, then shows what is left.
A £35,000 salary leaves £28,720 a year in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which is £2,393 a month. The same salary in Scotland leaves £28,705 a year.
Pick the right region
Scotland sets its own income tax bands, so the answer changes once you switch region. England, Wales and Northern Ireland share one set of bands. National Insurance is the same everywhere.

Questions people ask
Is the salary I type before or after tax?
Before tax. This is your gross pay, the figure in your contract. The calculator takes tax and National Insurance off and shows what is left.
Does the salary calculator include a bonus?
Only if you add it to the salary you type. A bonus is taxed as pay, so add it to your yearly total for a fair estimate.
Which tax year does it use?
The 2026/27 tax year, from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027.
